The Worst Travel Day That We Made The Best Of
One of the trips we have been most excited to go on was to Maine. After months of research, booking, and planning, we had planned an exciting trip to Portland and Acadia National Park. We had booked a sailing trip and figured out when the weather would be best for each hike we wanted to accomplish. We even looked up sunrise and sunset times along with the high and low tides. We were excited and prepared until we weren’t.
During July 2016, the airline we were flying experienced a major computer outage. Flights were delayed and canceled left and right. However, we were confident because no other trips to Maine had been affected, and all day the airline was reporting that our flight was on time.
We waited in the terminal as our flight went from on time to delayed and more delayed until eventually, it was canceled because of a shortage of flight attendants. We were utterly disappointed and in disbelief. After getting our luggage, we tried to reschedule. Still, there were no flights for several days, meaning we would miss most of our trip and basically have to turn right back around.
We debated on driving up the east coast but instead decided to cut our losses. At the time, we were sad, but amazing things came out of the cancellation, including trips that changed our travel mindset forever.
It’s not Maine, but it sure is beautiful
We are incredibly fortunate that Andrew’s grandparents have a beautiful beach house in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, that they allow us to visit frequently throughout the summer. We decided to spend our would be Maine trip at the Jersey shore.
While it wasn’t new scenery, we always love relaxing on the beach, with it’s soft, fine sand.
When at the shore we keep busy riding bikes to the nature reserve and walking down to the jetty.
On rainy days, we enjoy shopping in Cape May or sampling beers at Cape May Brewery.
Our favorite spot for a sunset view is Two Mile Landing Crab House.
We both agree that the beach at Wildwood is the nicest we’ve been to in the northeast. There is rarely any seaweed, and there are always dolphins to see jumping offshore.
