We have always loved to spend time exploring different places and tasting new foods together. At the start of our relationship, we traveled to Chicago, Miami and even flew across the pond to Ireland to visit Erica’s dad and stepmom.
However, we didn’t realize how deep our passion for travel was until fate struck, and our plans for a week in Maine got canceled. The airline we booked to take us to Maine for Andrew’s birthday in Acadia National Park had to cancel our flight and could not offer us any later flights. Our trip was over before it even started, and we were distraught.
Luckily for us, we were given refunds for the flight and additional vouchers to make up for all of the money we lost in cancellation fees. While we were still sad, we booked two domestic flights with the money we got back. We decided to check out New Orleans and Puerto Rico. We both agree that our trip to Puerto Rico changed our perspective on traveling forever. We rented a car and drove around the island, learning a ton along the way from locals who would frequently seek us out to advise us of where to explore.
After our Puerto Rico experience, we knew that we needed to use all of Erica’s school breaks to see the world. We vowed to leave the country at least once a year and see more of the United States. Each time Erica had a break, we looked for the cheapest flights that would allow us to stay in our destination the longest. In a little over two years, we made it to Colorado, France, Philadelphia, Mexico City, Texas, Spain, and, most recently, Colombia.
Being in Colombia was another turning point for us. After ten days of exploring the country, we were not ready to return home. We had encountered many people who had a passion for traveling and were doing it long-term. On our first night home, neither of us could fall asleep. We were both awake, thinking about where to go next when almost at the same time, we thought aloud, what if we don’t come back next time? We became obsessed with researching options for long-term travel and pretty quickly decided that in June 2020, we would both quit our jobs and travel for a year.
Of course, 2020 had other plans for us. By the time May rolled around, we had realized that the pandemic wasn’t going away anytime soon, and we had to cancel the few reservations we had booked. Erica had already quit her job, and we had already given up our lease. We threw around many ideas but ultimately decided that we would use AirBnb to travel around the U.S. Since then, we bought a new car and have been to North Carolina and Maine. Now we’re heading out cross-country to see what the west has in store.
To keep our families and friends informed of our travels and maybe help some like-minded travelers along the way, we have decided to start this blog. We want to log things that we did and the mistakes we made. Initially, we hoped to share about the exceptional people we met along the journey, but we will be social distancing for now! We hope you enjoy coming along for the ride.
So far we have stayed in Kanab, UT, Tucson, AZ, San Diego, CA, Carson City, NV, Newport, OR, Kingston, WA, and Livingston, MT. We are currently enjoying the Rocky Mountains in Dillon, CO. See our latest posts here!
